I was truly honoured to have my silk screen print titled ‘Weeping Willow - Son Of A Famous Star’ selected for this year’s Bainbridge Open 2025. It was also a wonderful opportunity to share the gallery space with an amazing group of incredibly talented printmakers, each bringing their own unique vision and creativity to the exhibition.
Thank you @bainbridgeprint for creating this opportunity.
'Weeping Willow - Son Of A Famous Star’
Silk screen print
Print size: 30 x 42cm. Media size: 38 x 56cm
Weeping willows in Japanese art, as in ukiyo-e prints, represent grace, femininity, and Spring, but can also signify ghosts and evil spirits. It is thought that a ghost may emerge where a willow grows, and the tree symbolizes humility due to its bending branches. The Japanese text next to the print, along with a red seal, means “Son of a famous star,” representing knowledge, values, fertility, time and acts as the artist's pseudonym.
Ukiyo-e means "pictures of the floating world" and reflects the idea of "ukiyo," a concept that started in Buddhist philosophy. Originally, "ukiyo" referred to life's sufferings, but during the Edo period, it came to symbolize the fleeting nature of worldly pleasures and desires.
